HATANO WATARU
DIRECTION, PLANNING, PRODUCTION, VIDEOGRAPHY DIRECTION WORK
OVERVIEW
We were responsible for the concept development, structuring, direction, and production of a studio film featuring Japanese washi artisan and artist Wataru Hatano. Set in Northern Kyoto, in the city of Ayabe, the film centers on the seasonal transitions of the landscape and the subtle presence of light, water, and wind embedded in the land. It portrays the quiet accumulation of time within the making process, capturing the tactile dialogue between material and body that gives rise to delicate textures. Through this approach, the work constructs a layered visual world where the spirituality of craft intersects with contemporary cinematic expression, ultimately visualizing both the universality of washi as a material and the artist’s philosophy.
